It is time to announce the final winner in our Tennis Fixation Super Giveaway Extravaganza. All during National Tennis Month, Tennis Fixation has been giving away fun prizes to our favorite followers, those being the followers who left comments on Tennis Fixation posts. Our last prize, announced last Monday, is the adorable Tennis Team Captain Party Pack.
And the winner is . . . Holly! Holly left this very succinct and winning comment on the Party Pack post - "Cute gift ideas!" Cute indeed, Holly!
So, Holly, to get your Tennis Team Captain Party Pack, just e-mail your shipping address to me at kimselzman(at)gmail(dot)com. And be sure to contact me within the next three days or I will have to draw a new winning name from the entries.
Thanks to everyone who has commented and entered all of the giveaways throughout National Tennis Month. It has been a lot of fun for me to put these together and I will do it again very soon - if for no other reason than that I get to post these fabulous pageant pictures!

Tennis Fashion Fix: Ana Ivanovic's 2011 French Open Look
Labels:
Ana Ivanovic,
fashion,
French Open
I just can't get these posts out fast enough! If you didn't see Ana Ivanovic in this cute dress at the French Open - you won't see her wearing it there at all. Because she's already out of the French Open. Oh well. She's gone but her dress is available at tennis retail outlets everywhere.
Despite its failure to be a lucky dress for Ana, let's take a look at it anyway because it's pretty darn cute. Ana is outfitted by Adidas and this is actually the same dress she wore for the Australian Open but in colors that would show up much better against the red clay of Roland Garros. This version is in a deep pink with orange trim at the shoulders and green graphics at the chest. It also has a half zip up the front, slits on the sides, and a keyhole opening in the back - sexy and cool. You can see Ana in the dress here:
And here's a better view of the dress, the sports bra and the compression shorts:
The best part of this dress is that it actually comes WITH the sports bra and the shorts. Since the whole package is regularly priced at $65, that is a fantastic deal.
While I'm sorry that we won't see Ana wearing this over the next two weeks, I'm happy that Adidas has put something out that us normal tennis players might actually buy.
DON'T FORGET: Leave a comment on this post to enter the Tennis Fixation Super Giveaway Extravaganza for a tennis-themed prize pack. Go to this post - Tennis Fixation Giveaway - Win A Tennis Team Captain Party Pack! - to see what you can win and for info on how to get more entries!

Tennis Fixation Giveaway - Win A Tennis Team Captain Party Pack!
Labels:
captains,
giveaway,
tennis party
It's time for another National Tennis Month Tennis Fixation Super Giveaway Extravaganza giveaway - and I know you are going to love this one!
I'm calling this my "Tennis Team Captain Party Pack" because it would make a great gift for a team captain or for a tennis team party prize. Now before I go on, please excuse the very unprofessional quality of these photos. I took them myself and, as they say at the local tennis pro shop, you get what you pay for. So here is what the Tennis Team Captain Party Pack includes:
1. Super cute and reusable hot pink gift bag covered in tennis balls (see the picture above),
2. Notecards that match the bag and say "Team Player" on the front:
3. Pack of 4 appetizer spreaders each having 3 stacked tennis balls as handles - perfect for using with your party treats:
4. Tennis ball-covered ankle socks from K-Bell in the usual sock size 9-11:
So here's what I would do with this pack of goodies - give the notecards to my captain in the reusable gift bag, make some kind of fancy over-the-top appetizer that requires spreaders and pull out the darling tennis-ball handled spreaders to impress everyone with, and keep the socks for myself since they are too adorable to part with. But that is me. You might actually be generous enough to give this all to your captain.
So how do you win the Tennis Team Captain Party Pack? Easy!
So leave a comment right now to make sure your entered in this giveaway. And then continue to check in and comment to gain entries throughout the week! I will draw the winning entry after midnight on May 28 and announce the winner on May 29.
Please note: Winners will be announced on this site. Winners must respond to me with their e-mail address within 3 days (by June 1) of being named. If I don't hear from the first winner within the 3 days, another winner will be selected.
If you are the least bit confused about how to enter this giveaway, just send me an e-mail at this address - kimselzman(at)gmail(dot)com - and I will give you all the help you need to become a Tennis-Fixation-giveaway-enterer!

Tip From The Pro: Counteracting The Baseline Lobber In Doubles
This is a guest post from Brian Montez, tennis pro and owner of K Factor Sports. Brian is a teaching pro working with players of all levels and abilities, from kids to adults, beginners to open-level, and everything in between. Here, Brian gives a great tip for dealing with lobbers.
How do you get out of a rally with a baseline player that lobs the ball every time they hit it you? Attack! Don't be afraid to take the ball out of the air and attack to the net player's alley or angle the ball off and away from the baseliner, forcing that person to move out of position and opening up the court. You should never stay at the baseline and hit it right back to the lobber because they will only continue to lob. Playing the lob game will cause you much frustration and take you out of your game!
DON'T FORGET: Leave a comment on this post to enter the Tennis Fixation Super Giveaway Extravaganza for a copy of the tennis instruction book Bring Your Racquet. Go to this post - Tennis For Kids Made Easy In Bring Your Racquet - for info on how to get more entries!

New Shades Out For Serena's Glam Slam Nail Polish
Labels:
fashion,
Serena Williams
Just because Serena Williams will not be playing in the 2011 French Open doesn't mean we can't still talk about her. Because this is the year that nail polish manufacturer OPI decided to put out a collection of polishes focused on Serena and timed to roll out with each of the Grand Slams. Ha! I'm sure the OPI marketing geniuses are kicking themselves that THIS is the year they jumped on the Serena Williams band wagon. A wagon that is currently going nowhere except maybe to the occasional fashion show and appearance on the Home Shopping Network.
Anyway, as you may recall, Serena didn't play in the 2011 Australian Open and OPI was stuck trying to convince the non-tennis-playing-freaky-nail-polish-wearing public to buy this interesting combo from Serena's Glam Slam collection:
These are "Simply Smashing," a glowing, glittery green nail lacquer that might arguably be tennis ball-colored; and "Black Shatter," a quick-dry topcoat that, when applied to a dry undercoat, produces a shattered or leopard-print look. You can read all about this first set in this post: Serena's Glam Slam Collection Is Here - Even If She's Not.
The next two sets have just come out in time for the French Open. Here's "Rally Pretty Pink" and "Red Shatter":
I'm guessing that this would have been the French Open set because it would match the Nike outfit she would have worn at the French Open. Here's a shot of that:
While I'm not into the pink and red nail color combo, the dress is great looking. Too bad she won't be out in the Paris clay wearing it.
The other set, which I'm guessing was supposed to roll out for Wimbledon based on its white color, is "Spark de Triomphe" and "White Shatter":
You can see with all three of these sets, there is a lot going on - a lot of sparkle, a lot of glitter, a lot of leopard-print shattering. While I'm not a nail polish-wearing tennis player, I do think having Serena sell this stuff based on her nail care proclivities, was pretty smart on OPI's part. How could they have foreseen that she would miss the first two Slams of the year? Hopefully, she'll be around when Wimbledon happens this summer. And hopefully, for OPI, she'll be sporting the Glam Slam collection on her nails.
DON'T FORGET: Leave a comment on this post to enter the Tennis Fixation Super Giveaway Extravaganza giveaway for a copy of the tennis instruction book Bring Your Racquet. Go to this post - Tennis For Kids Made Easy In Bring Your Racquet - for info on how to get more entries!

Tennis Fashion Fix: Maria Sharapova's 2011 French Open Look
Labels:
fashion,
French Open,
Maria Sharapova
It's that time again - the next Slam is almost here and the focus is now on tennis fashion. Qualifying for the French Open begins today (!!) and Nike has just revealed the looks its stars will be wearing at Roland Garros.
First up - Maria Sharapova. Coming off a decisive win over Samantha Stosur on the clay in last week's Rome Masters finals, Maria will go into the French Open ranked No. 7 in the world. Who knew? So she may make a good run at the French Open.
Regardless of how deep she goes, she'll look great, in my opinion, in this Maria Line 9 dress in pale yellow. First, the action shot put out by Nike:
While it's hard to see the dress in that photo, I love all the clay flying. Here's a better shot of Maria in the complete outfit she's expected to wear, showing off the dress with its multi-tiered skirt, the shoes, and the visor:
And here's another shot of just the dress, so you can get a better look at the double-points on the hem and the ribbon binding around the bodice:
I'm not sure I've got my fashion terms right there but you get the idea. And of course there are cute shoes to match:
While I don't agree with every fashion choice made by Maria, I think she got it right this time. I hope she'll be around long enough for us to see this outfit in action.

Tennis For Kids Made Easy In Bring Your Racquet
Labels:
giveaway,
tennis books
I just finished reading Bring Your Racquet: Tennis Basics For Kids by Steven White and all I can say is, "Where was this book when I was first started playing tennis?" Because it's written for younger players (maybe 7 and older) who are just taking up the game, the instructions are short, easy to understand and clearly illustrated. Just what all beginning tennis players need, not just kids.
Because my 11 year-old, Matthew, has been playing for a few months now, I thought it would be fun and a true test of this book to give it to him to read and then to interview him about it. At least, it seemed like a good idea. Here's how that incredibly coherent interview went:
Kim: Did you like this book?
Matthew: Yes, I like to read about sports and I like tennis so this was a good book.
Kim: Was it easy for you to understand?
Matthew: Well, I know about tennis so this book was easy for me.
Kim: Did you like the pictures?
Matthew: Yes, kind of. They are kind of different. I don't know about Japanese stuff. But OK, they were OK.
Kim: Could you understand what the book was teaching you about tennis?
Matthew: Well, I know about tennis so I could understand it. This is what I learn at (the club where he takes lessons) so I already knew this stuff.
Kim: Was it easy for you to understand though?
Matthew: Yes Mom! I could understand it. Jeez. I am a good reader you know. Can I go now?
The interview rapidly degenerated from there. But my conclusion is that Bring Your Racquet was very appropriate for my 11 year-old. And with short chapters focused on single concepts and clear illustrations, any beginning player could learn quite a bit from this book.
Now, here's the best news: the author was nice enough to send me a copy of Bring Your Racquet, autographed no less, to giveway to one of my lucky Tennis Fixation followers during the Tennis Fixation Super Giveway Extravaganza being held all this month in honor of National Tennis Month. If you're interested in winning this great book, here's what you need to do:
Please note: Winners will be announced on this site. Winners must respond to me with their e-mail address within 3 days (by May 25) of being named. If I don't hear from the first winner within the 3 days, another winner will be selected.

A Tennis Cake With Pink Cupcakes - Yum!
Labels:
giveaway,
tennis cakes
This is my new hobby - looking for tennis cakes on the Internet. I came across this one and here's my first thought - the net is totally wrong. The net strings should run parallel and perpendicular to the court, not diagonally. Is that what you thought or am I a tennis cake snob? Having said that, I am impressed with the attempt to even make a tennis net out of something edible. And I LOVE the pink cupcakes - nothing to do with tennis but they look yummy. The more food-coloring saturated icing they pile on, the better.
I found this on a website called The Twisted Sifter. Here's their description:

I found this on a website called The Twisted Sifter. Here's their description:
The tennis court birthday cake was created for a party in Louisville, KY. The lower tier was a spice cake with a fresh apple filling and a dolce de leche icing under the fondant. The top tier was a white cake with fresh lemon filling and a vanilla butter cream under the marshmallow fondant. The cupcakes were strawberry with a fresh strawberry filling and a cream cheese icing. The net was created out of royal icing and allowed to dry for several days. The pink tennis balls were made from fondant and then decorated with royal icing. There's a lot going on with this cake - maybe too much. But look at those pink cupcakes!

Free USTA Membership For Juniors!
Labels:
giveaway
I just added a fabulous, fun site to my "I Heart Tennis Websites!" list in the sidebar: www.Tennis-Bargains.com (You didn't know there was an "I Heart Tennis Websites!" list in the sidebar? Well, you need to check it out! Go to the far right of this page and scroll down about halfway to find the list.). Tennis-Bargains is a great place for deals and discounts on tennis gear, apparel, tickets, memberships, and on and on.
The reason I'm highlighting Tennis-Bargains right now is because those guys discovered an incredible deal being offered by the USTA. Between now and Dec. 31, 2011, kids 10 and under can get a totally FREE Junior membership to the USTA! All of the details are given in this Tennis-Bargains post: USTA Membership FREE code - Ages 10 and under. If you click on that title, you'll be taken to the Tennis-Bargains post that will walk you through the steps on how to sign your child up for this free membership. I personally went through the process but didn't complete it since my kid is 11 and I didn't want to one day get in trouble with the USTA when he's trying to get on the United States Davis Cup team and they point out that he lied about his age back in 2011.
The free Junior membership includes a subscription to "Bounce" magazine (a tennis publication aimed at kids), access to USTA Junior tournaments, and a chance to play USTA Junior team tennis. As you probably guessed, this is all part of the USTA's big push to get kids involved in the new 10 and under tennis format they've adopted and to hopefully attract children to tennis at a younger age.
So, if your child is young enough, check out this great deal on Tennis-Bargains and get your free USTA Junior membership!

I was a little bit giddy when I was contacted by 2K Sports and asked if I wanted to review the latest version of TopSpin. Trying out clothes and sunscreen is one thing. But when a major game manufacturer thinks that Tennis Fixation is a place where they might find people interested in their game, that tells me that the word is out - Tennis Fixation attracts obsessive compulsive players who are serious about being able to play tennis any time, in any weather.
So what do I think of TopSpin4? Total fun. Having played TopSpin3, I was really excited about some of the features the new version has. For one thing, you have a huge selection of current and past ATP and WTA players to play as, with and against. My favorite match was when I played doubles as Serena Williams against Jelena Jankovic and Carolina Wozniacki. My partner? Serena Williams! That's right - I got to play two Serenas against JJ and Caro. We were unbeatable.
And each player has two outfits that you can choose to dress them in. I know - who cares? Well, I cared and spent quite a bit of time deciding which one of Ana Ivanovic's outfits looked best against the French Open's red clay. Because, oh yeah, they have a huge selection of venues for you to play your matches in - all the Slams plus a bunch of other major locations from the pro tours.
Plus, you can create your own player, deciding what strengths and weaknesses and outfits to give him or her. My player was cute although he was easily beaten by Rafael Nadal.
If you've never played TopSpin before (or any other Wii game for that matter), just be warned - the controls and motions needed to play this game don't duplicate what you do with an actual racquet on an actual court. So it may take you a little time to get the hang of it. But once you get the idea, you'll find you're moving Roger Federer around and into the net for the game winning volley with no problem.
Thanks to the nice people at 2K Sports, I have a nice, new, still-sealed-in-its-package Wii version of TopSpin 4 to give to one lucky Tennis Fixation follower. (2K Sports also puts out TopSpin4 for other gaming systems and the features are virtually the same.)
So how can you win your own copy of the Wii version of TopSpin4? As always, there are MANY ways to win and they are all very easy.
Please note: Winners will be announced on this site. Winners must respond to me with their e-mail address within 3 days (by May 18) of being named.

Our First Tennis Fixation Super Giveway Extravaganza Winner Is . . .
Labels:
giveaway
We have a winner!
As you know, our first giveaway in the great Tennis Fixation Super Giveaway Extravaganza was for a very cute plaid tennis skort or an equally fetching v-neck tank from the 4allbyjofit London Collection. I have both of these pieces (thank you 4all!) and love them so I got to give one of them to one of you, my fabulous Tennis Fixation followers.
Over the past week, you guys left great comments on my posts and I counted those up, numbered them and, using a random number generator came up with a winner. And the winner is . . . Ashley R!
Ashley left this comment on the post about using the lob return: "I have to play people who lob very often. I always get pushed back but I never mind it because I love the base line. I try to avoid lobs because people don't think its a real shot but I sometimes use it when I'm against a good vollier. I think i'll try using it more. Thanks!"
So, Ashley R - You chose the Orchid colored V-Neck Tank from 4allbyjofit as your piece to win in this giveaway. Just send me an e-mail at kimselzman(at)gmail(dot)com to give me your mailing address and your size. I can tell you what I think of the sizing to help you make the right choice.
And everyone else - thank you so much for entering and for your great comments. And, guess what? The next giveaway in the Tennis Fixation Super Giveaway Extravanganza will be announced tomorrow, Monday, May 9. It is for something that I think you and your whole family will love so, as always, stay tuned!
Happy National Tennis Month!

More Benefits From Coffee!
I'm thinking I should rename this blog "Coffee Fixation" to reflect my obsession with tracking down every health benefit to be gained from drinking coffee. Here's the latest:
According to a recent Swedish study, women who drank at least one cup of coffee a day had a 22 to 25 percent lower risk of stroke compared to those who drank less or no coffee. Apparently, this doesn't mean that you should run out to Starbucks and start downing coffee if you aren't already. It just shows that coffee-drinkers tend to have a lower stroke risk than non-coffee-drinkers. However you interpret it, I'm keeping up my coffee drinking.
DON'T FORGET: Leave a comment on this post to enter the Tennis Fixation Super Giveaway Extravaganza giveaway for your choice of a super cute plaid tennis skort or an adorable Orchid v-neck tank from the www.4allbyjofit.com London collection. And go to this post - Tennis Fixation Super Giveaway Extravaganza - Win A 4all Piece During National Tennis Month! - for info on how to get more entries for this great giveaway!
BONUS: Just in time for Mother's Day! Now is the perfect time to get your favorite tennis mom a super-cute 4all outfit with free shipping on all orders over $75. Quick Tennis Fix: Don't Forget The Lob Return!
"Houston, we have a lob!" |
1. It mixes things up which is often all you need to do to win a point.
2. It can put the brakes on, or at least slow down, a serve and volley player.
3. In doubles, it keeps the ball away from a net opponent who has been poaching well. Done enough times, it may force him or her to back off the net.
4. If you're returning serve from the deuce side and the server is a rightie (or if you're on the ad side against a leftie), a deep lob return down the line and over your net opponent forces the server to run down the ball and take it with her backhand. This is not an easy shot even if the server moves well. It is very difficult for a server who has trouble on the run or avoids his or her backhand.
Now, I'm not saying that every return should be a lob return - I've actually played opponents who think the lob return followed by the short shot is the key to victory (and it may be at lower levels but not at OUR level, right?). But I am saying don't avoid this return just because you think it's not a serious shot or it's not real tennis. The lob return can be a great shot if hit well and used at the right time. So don't forget it!

Tennis Fixation Super Giveaway Extravaganza - Win A 4all Piece During National Tennis Month!
I just received two new pieces from the 4all London collection and you, my favorite followers, can win one of them in the Tennis Fixation Super Giveaway Extravaganza! The best part of this giveaway? You get to choose which piece you want!
So take a look at your choices. First up is the London Pleated Tennis Skort:
I have one of these and I love-love-love it! The colors are great - a plaid that is pinkish-purple accented with black, white and gray. The pleats at the bottom of the skirt are cute and flirty but the length (14 1/2") keeps it from straying into "I'm dressed inappropriately because I refuse to accept my age" territory. I have an abundance of black, white and gray tops that match this skirt (as I'm sure you do) but it pairs exceptionally well with this:
This is the London V-Neck Tank in an adorable pinky-purple called "Orchid." This is nicely fitted but not too tight which is exactly what I need when I'm trying, as always, to perfect my serve. And, not surprisingly, this color goes with a lot of skirts and shorts that I already own. I especially like it with my 4all New Orleans skort in black and white print (remember? we gave one of those away in this post: What's Black And White And Cute All Over?).
So how can you win the London Pleated Tennis Skort or the London V-Neck Tank? There are MANY ways to win and they are all very easy.
Please note: Winners will be announced on this site. Winners must respond to me with their e-mail address within 3 days (by May 11) of being named.
